Me an Research
I was 17 years old in 2003, doing my final year of high school, when I touched a computer for the first time. This was after 5 years of majoring in accounting because my high school accounting teacher insisted on us doing accounting in higher grade in order to become chartered accountants one day. But I was fond of computers; therefore, at tertiary, I chose a programme with both accounting and computing, a Diploma in Financial Information Systems majoring in both financial accounting and software development. I performed well academically, especially in accounting. I tutored accounting to first- and second-year students for 3 years. However, I was not fulfilled. I was not content with preparing financial statements, and when financial statements were balanced, that meant the end of the story. I wanted to do more—something that makes a difference in people’s lives and solves real-life problems. For a postgraduate qualification, I enrolled in a B.Tech. in Information Technology (IT), majoring in Software Engineering and Research Methodology. I then joined the world of work as a software developer.
Early in my career in the corporate environment, I was captivated by how applications and systems benefit users by increasing productivity and operational efficiency. Gradually, I have been intrigued by the transformative power of information communication technology (ICT) tools and how they can be applied to contribute to efforts aimed at addressing societal challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality. In my quest to find my purpose, my mentor advised me to find a Sustainable Development Goal that resonates and inspires me the most and decide to live for that SDG goal. For me, that is SDG No.08 – concerned with “decent work and economic growth.”
From my Master’s degree academic experience and working as a senior manager for knowledge management, I have gained a deep appreciation for research and how new knowledge may be applied to inform practice, policy development, and innovation. Further to my Master’s, I believe there is still an opportunity for me to make an academic contribution in the field of computer science and information systems. I am passionate about how artificial intelligence (AI) can be exploited to achieve information and communications technology for development (ICT4D) outcomes in social, economic, and political development. An intentional effort will be required to make sure that new uses of AI and open data are improving human lives rather than impeding its advancement as these AI algorithms get more complex.
It gives me pleasure to impart my knowledge and expertise to others. Academic environments also make me feel at ease and motivated. In addition, I would like to support efforts that advance diversity and inclusion, as well as mentor and coach the upcoming generation of scientists. For these reasons, I want to continue with my Ph.D. I believe it will provide me relevant technical know-how, analytical expertise, and professional network I need as a foundation for a long and successful academic career, as a researcher, lecturer, chair of a research fund, head of a research institute and member in advisory boards.
I am enthusiastic about development policy and management and its potential to improve the world, and I am thrilled about the opportunities that Ph.D. programme offers. All things being equal, I am so excited by the prospects of joining a community of determined and passionate researchers who share my enthusiasm.
